Chandra – The Moon

“Abounding in Vata and Kapha and filled with knowing is the Moon of round body, O’ Twice Born, auspicious looks, of sweet speech, fluctuating and love sick.”

The round body of the Moon shows its variable and fluctuating nature. It is like a ball, rolling here and rolling there, based on its environment. The Moon's orbit is the least consistent and it moves the fastest of all the celestial bodies. Elementally the Moon is made of vata (wind) and kapha (water). The Moon rules water, yet when too close or influenced by the Sun or Mars  (fire) or other airy planets (Saturn, Mercury, rahu) the Moon will tends to vata (wind) disorders, which means nervousness, fear and anxiety. When not affected by these other planets, the Moon brings patience, stability, connection and peace. Whereas the Sun is the power behind creation, the Moon is the capacity to reflect and experience this creation through the mind and heart. The Moon is the main planet of psychology and how we absorb our environments. Whereas the Sun is related to the archetypical male, the Moon is related to the archetypical female energy. Auspicious looks attract the Honey colored eyes of the Sun, sweet speech attracts the intelligence of the Sun. She is full of knowing, which is related to the heart and reflective power of intuition. Yet the Moon does not have an assertive quality it is 100% reflective in nature. Just as the Sun has no reflective quality, it is 100% assertive in nature. This 100% reflective quality of the Moon shows where we may feel overtaken by our environments and our impressions. The Moon is where we feel the most vulnerable, and thus will rely on the strength of the Sun (our power) to protect us. This refers to the lovesick nature of the Moon, to want to feel connected to existence, both psychologically and physically. In many ways the Moon may be the most difficult planet to understand, because in some ways the Moon refers to our entire experience in a body.

Exalted in Taurus. The fluctuating watery nature of the Moon is exalted when resting upon the fixed Earth nature of Taurus. Taurus is perhaps the most solid, stable, peace loving sign in the zodiac. Taurus, as the female expression of Venus, provides a fertile soil into which the intangible longings of the Moon can take root in the tangible world. Surrounded by such creative manifestation, the heart and mind can more easily settle, which leads to the capacity for introspection and peace.

Debilitated in Scorpio. The impressionable, subjective nature of the Moon is greatly disturbed in the sign of Scorpio, whose intensity and tendency for dramatic upheavals through restless, psychological probing keeps the heart and mind in a constant unsettled state. Scorpio is the sign where we are learning to strengthen our insecurities. The male planets (Sun, Jupiter, Mars) can handle that sort of scrutiny; however the Moon does not do so well when criticized. Rather than strengthen our insecurities, when the Moon is here we simply create more insecurities, fears and longings. A shown by her exaltation point in Taurus, the Moon, as the main indicator of the mind and emotions, needs a stable environment first, only then will the mind and emotions settle enough for a deeper and lasting peace to be realized.
