Guru - Jupiter
“Large bodied is Jupiter, and also yellow haired and eyed, of Kapha nature, intelligent and proficient in all Shastras.”
The higher Jupiter is God’s grace, wisdom, ethics aligned with right behavior and optimism. The lower Jupiter can be a haughty showman, concerned with appearance, status and the admiration of others. Jupiter is our capacity to do good, and to always wish to choose the good over the bad. He is where we expand in life and want to share God’s grace. Through wealth, children and education we expand externally; through faith and valuing God’s grace we expand internally. Jupiter rules all of these domains. We all have a higher vision of ourselves that we are expanding toward -Jupiter shows that vision and how we would like it to play out in our lives. Jupiter gives us face and hope that things will get better. A weak Jupiter will either lack hope or be unrealistic in expressing it. A foolhardy optimism is possible. Jupiter aligned with our sense of duty will allow for our higher vision to not only lead us externally but also expand internally. Where is Mercury rules the details in life, Jupiter rules the abstractions in life. The abstract quality of the mind is the domain of Jupiter. Perceiving the value in teachings, knowledge, God comes from Jupiter, and it is these things that leads to optimism and hope in our life. When things get difficult, and we face obstacles, it is our deeper philosophies and understanding of the big picture that keeps us moving forward. Jupiter also defines that worthy goal that were striving towards. Jupiter keeps us focused on that goal. Yet in keeping us focused, we may overlook important details (the qualities of Mercury) that could've helped us better navigate toward our goal. Jupiter is also very orthodox in nature and may cause us to march lockstep with a rigid belief system and gain a sense of self superiority for it. Religious fanaticism and condemnation of others, whose belief systems seem inferior, have a powerful Jupiter nature to them. As such Jupiter is more related to religion, not spirituality. The spiritual nature of Jupiter emerges when the capacity for experimentation and play (Mercury) is also present. Otherwise a person may love the trappings and ceremony of their inherited religion, for example, yet an authentic spiritual search, where these beliefs are tested, may elude them.

Exalted in Cancer. The expansive nature of Jupiter becomes an internal, creative force in the sign of Cancer. The Cardinal water nature of Cancer insists upon growth through strengthening the internal process of any planet in her sign. This is the perfect domain for Jupiter, to expand internally, through the element of water, our basic feeling nature. The mystical and abstract quality of Jupiter, when expressed through the emotional intuition of Cancer allows for a profound spiritual unfolding and expansion towards a deep understanding of our essential nature.
Debilitated in Capricorn. Jupiter's expansive nature becomes expressed externally, materially in the Sun Capricorn. The rational, useful, practical nature of Capricorn disturbs the mystical nature of Jupiter, leading to a rigidity and orthodoxy of belief and a mindless material expansion. The practical nature of Capricorn spoils the hopeful and optimistic quality of Jupiter. Hope, intuition and abstract thinking are completely opposite the rational calculating and practical nature of Capricorn. The synthetic, merging quality of water sign Cancer promotes the highest promise of Jupiter, the useful practical in detail-oriented nature of Capricorn spoils it and darkens his optimistic nature.
