Hanuman
Hanuman is the beloved and famous monkey god and devotee of Lord Rama, the hero of the Ramayana. It is Sri Hanuman who helps Lord Rama reclaim his beloved wife Sita from the cruel demon king Ravana in the Ramayana. The legend of Hanuman is from the epic poem, Mahabharata, where he appears as an incarnation of Lord Siva through the grace and blessings of his god-father Pavandev. He was also blessed at birth with the powers of all of the gods, thus giving him super powerful strength. Also he is able to change his size from incredibly large to incredibly small and other amazing qualities. There are many tales of bravery and daring surrounding Sri Hanuman. As said above In the Ramayana, Hanuman helps lord Rama rescue his wife search for Sita. He discovers and consoles her in Lanka. He burns the city of Lanka and kills many demons in order to free her. He brings together Vibhishana (the diplomat and brother of the evil Ravana) and Lord Rama, who returns to Lanka with Lord Rama and features very prominently in the battle that ensues between Lord Rama and Ravana. He also saves the life of Lakshmana (Rama’s brother) by bringing the life giving herb, Sanjivani from the Himalayas. But beyond the specific tales of heroism, Hanuman-ji is representative of the beloved and devoted companion and friend. He is the archetypal Karma Yogi, who will do anything in service to God and the master, even sacrificing life itself. Hanuman continued to serve Lord Rama for as long as he lived a human life on Earth. Symbolically Hanuman represents the breath, our constant companion and aid along the spiritual path. He is the son of the wind, (vayu) the very essence of prana (vital energy) itself. Whenever we need increased power and vitality Hanuman is there for us, we need only remember him. Our breath and prana for it is breath that serves the divine within us all.
