Brahma
Lord Brahma is the creative force in the Hindu trinity, created from the immortal “Brahman.” The term “Brahman” is the term for the universal cosmic consciousness. It is the original substratum of all matter and energy in its pure form and beyond all qualities. (Gunas) For after having emerged from Brahman, he first created water, into which he deposited his seed. This seed became a golden egg, and from this egg, he was born as Brahma or Hiranyagarbha, which means “born of the golden egg.” When he was born he cut the egg open and the Sound “Aum” emerged and then all other creaturely life began to take shape around the Pranava. (The sound of Aum.) Lord Brahma is often depicted with four heads, each head signifying one of the 4 Vedas. He also has four arms with a different object in each of his four hands. In one hand is his bow, in another a rosary, in another a sacrificial ladle and in the last he holds the Vedas. The four castes are also believed to have originated from Brahma: the Brahmins (Priests) from his head, the Kshatriyas (Warriors) from his arms, the Vaishyas (merchants) from his thighs, and the Shudras (workers) from his feet. The universe is said to exist for one day in the life of Brahma. Until it is destroyed, Brahma then sleeps for one night. When he awakens, he recreates the world again. However, one night of Brahma is 432,00,00,000 human years in length. This process is repeated for 100 Braham years, which is the life span of one Brahma. Then everything dissolves into its constituent elements. Then the whole process repeats again. This is how time immemorial through the great Yugas are measured and unfold according to Hinduism. Brahma's vehicle or vahana is a white swan or goose, which has the ability to separate soma and milk from water. But Brahma’s swan was also involved in an incident that caused Lord Brahma to not be worshipped here on Earth as Vishnu and Siva are. Legend has it that Vishnu and Brahma were arguing about who had created the universe with Brahma stating that it was he alone. Vishnu was not willing to go along with that wanting to take partial credit himself for it’s creation. As they were fighting, A huge column of fire, symbolizing the Siva linga, appeared before them. In hopes of finding the origin of the flame, Vishnu assumed the form of a boar and went underground looking for its base, but it could not be found. Then Brahma mounted his Swan, and flew upwards into the sky until he went out of sight looking for the upper extremities of the flame. With no end in sight and fatigued he decided to return when he saw a flower falling. He caught the flower and asked where it was coming from. The flower said that it had fallen from Siva’s head. So Brahma lied to Vishnu and said that he had reached the head of Siva and as proof he offered the flower. Vishnu however, truthfully admitted that he could not find the base. So Siva placed a curse on Brahma for lying. The curse being that no one on Earth would worship Lord Brahma. And so it is that no shrine built exclusively for him. Also the ketaki flower, who stood as a false witness is never offered in Puja and also cursed.
